This "fireball" is made out of glowstone and netherrack, being netherrack only the top blocks that could hold up the fire.
I don't have any idea of how many blocks it took, but it took us one stack of arrows to get rid of a few of the Ghasts in the Nether.
I used something like that for my lighthouse once. The thing is that the stuff that was holding my netherrack was glass and inside that glass was lava!

Yeah, we got lost several times before, then we made a map which made the localization better, but this "lighthouse", tell you what... better thing we have done lately.
